Yet little attention has been paid to the tech workers who design and program these technologies. Instead, the spotlight often falls on two extremes: the elite class of tech entrepreneurs and the precarious digital proletariat of gig and crowd workers. This narrow focus has left a critical gap in understanding the middle-class professionals operating behind the scenes of digital capitalism. Drawing on over 50 original interviews and discourse analytical research conducted in the US and Germany, The Social Codes of Tech Workers takes readers deep into their hearts and minds. Robert Dorschel demonstrates how tech workers’ subjectivity is structured by a return of social critique, hybrid professional roles, and distinctive lifestyles. The book identifies tech workers as a contradictory class formation, oscillating between a spirit of emancipation and yet another spirit of capitalism. This work will appeal to scholars across disciplines concerned with digital labor, identity, and class, as well as to the broader public interested in the culture of the tech industry and the evolving future of work.","title":"The Social Codes of Tech Workers: Class Identity in Digital Captialism (Online)","url":"https://titaniumbones.github.io/small-things-website/events/hiss/2026-02-05-the-social-codes-of-tech-workers-class-identity-in-digital-c/"},{"audio":"","end":"2026-02-05T14:30:00-05:00","episode":0,"location":"KW 130","object":"","series":"small-things","seriesName":"Small Things","speakers":["Bhavani Raman"],"start":"2026-02-05T13:00:00-05:00","status":"confirmed","summary":"The pilot recording. Her talk will cover her development of usahwira as a queer African theory. The Shona concept of usahwira is a traditional covenant that formalised kinship between friends. In precolonial Zimbabwe, queer people used usahwira as a way hide same-sex relations under the guise of respectability. In the 80s and 90s, Queer Zimbabweans embraced it to show that queerness is indigenous and not a western import. Muchemwa is developing a historical account of usahwira to develop a Zimbabwean theory that meets queer Zimbabweans on their own terms. Instead of aiming to make African queerness legible to western formulations, the work shows that there are specific rooted African subjectivities that only become visible when we encounter queer Africans on their own terms.","title":"Queering Indigeneity and Indigenizing Queerness in Zimbabwe","url":"https://titaniumbones.github.io/small-things-website/events/hiss/2026-04-02-queering-indigeneity-and-indigenizing-queerness-in-zimbabwe/"},{"audio":"","end":"2026-04-02T14:30:00-04:00","episode":null,"location":"Online","object":"","series":"hiss","seriesName":"HISS Hub","speakers":[],"start":"2026-04-02T13:00:00-04:00","status":"confirmed","summary":"Sponsored by the Centre for Ethnography This book talk combines ethnography and memoir to make the case for reimagining addiction, both as lived experience and a diagnostic category. During ethnographic fieldwork on chemical exposure in Mexico City’s colonias populares, I encountered my neighbors defiantly celebrating their compulsive dependencies on alcohol, drugs, and junk food instead of hiding them in shame. My neighbors lived their compulsive dependencies as inseparable from the afterlives of NAFTA and the drug war, which disrupted my own tacit assumptions about addiction as personal failure. Even more transformatively, my neighbors praised addiction. After a lifetime of struggling against my sister’s alcoholism, my mother’s hoarding, and my own binge eating, my neighbors taught me that addiction could be a binding force—one that can connect, sustain, and demand devotion with and for others.
